Antimicrobial resistance in foodborne bacteria remains a public health concern in Europe

A recent joint report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reveals that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in common foodborne bacteria such as Salmonella and Campylobacter remains a significant public health concern across Europe, with a high proportion of isolates from humans and food-producing animals showing resistance to commonly used antibiotics and increasing resistance to critical drugs like ciprofloxacin; because these pathogens can spread from animals and food to people and compromise treatment effectiveness, the agencies underline the need for continued surveillance and coordinated “One Health” action across human, animal and food systems to protect antibiotic effectiveness.
